Appreciate if you can be clear of what items in specific are you looking for?
If the items are in general and not mecha-related, then pls get a mod to shift it to 'Talk it over coffee' section

Hi ,
Looking for chogokins, Yamato's macross series, gundam collectible , of course some other toy worth hunting for . But my plan is to buy my first chogokin , the RX47 mazinger and donald duck transformer . not sure whether it will be worthy to buy there or not , since I never buy a toy before while I was in Japan.

Cheaper to buy from Singapore.

not worth bringing back from Japan.

There are threads on toy hunting in Japan in the "Talk it over coffee" section, just do a search you should be able to find the thread. In general, my view is that you should only buy toys that show exclusives such as those Wonderfest exclusives or Tamashii exclusives etc. otherwise actually Singapore is already very well-stocked and the price is definitely comparable to Japan's. Take for example the Donald Duck transformer, my trip to Japan 2 weeks ago, the cheapest priced I saw is 2500Yen which is about $40 (the rest all around 3150Yen). It's not worth to lug the item back all the way back and if you are those particular about box condition, it will even be more stressful.

It will be good to do some online research on the retail prices of the items you are interested in before you go.

If I tell you I am not a scrapler , would you believe me? So I won't need to clarify too much on this.

As mentioned, for current toys our local prices are comparable. Don't waste valuable luggage space. Instead, you should buy exclusives and old/rare/vintages if you can find them.

Of course if you can, try to visit all the shops in gits_sac's link.
But if you're short on time at least have to visit Mandarake at Nakano Broadway and Akihabara. You might find some gems that are new or pre-owned and at bargain price.

Appreciate your post . I think I'll have quite alot of time in just akihabara itself (Got my wife book out pass for 1 day ) , guess I am posting the right place to look for the right information after all . I am going to get a video camera in Ueno ( Sanyo DMX CS-1 ) before going to akihabara , probably will use it on akihabara , COSPLAY gals! TOYS! GADGETS! HERE I COME! drool.gif

Bro, remember to bring a lot of JPY.

Credit card purchase is not readily available in Akihabara toy stores (dun ever believe that Mastercard advert with the dancing fatty saying you can go to Akihabara without a single Yen laugh.gif) and the only money changer available is in the bank (specific branches and timing only) and their rates sucks. I kenna when I went there F&E last October.

Found quite a few nice shops from the listings in the coffee section. Enjoy your japan trip plenty of shops to hunt around for the prefect piece tho i have to agree that sometimes it is cheaper to buy in sg!

to add on to this.. most of the money changer only accept USD... SGD some banks only. so better to change here before you fly off..

preety much of the shops already mentioned in the blog that qitsac has bro given.

as other bro suggest is to get those limited edition stuff or rare stuff or vintage will be more worth it for your trip... : )

Here is another vintage toy shop but it location is a bit on the rural side. I got my vintage MIB Road Caeser year ago at the shop and they even accept credit card (but will add a 5% charges to the total)

it’s actually nowhere now.
It's been taken down from Odaiba (which is in Tokyo) and plans are to build it up again in Shizuoka. But that'll only start in July this year and it'll be taken down again in Jan 2011.

There is the Tetsujin 28-gō statue in Kobe's Wakamatsu Park like the Gundam it is a 1:1 scale but a permanent installation with no moving parts."

Actually I booked a hotel near Shinagawa (near odaiba as well ) , and was hoping to see the 1:1 Ultimate perfect grade gundam. Too bad , probably will persuade my wife next year , osaka free and easy trip to include the shizuoka ( I am a gundam fan since I was a kid).

I rememberEd the first trip to tokyo, 80% of time is search and shopping of toys the rest spent on famous attraction like mt fuji and disney land tongue.gif

planned my route already in advance, from where to where, drop which station to change train
so u may want to do that to save some precious time . If u ran out of luggage space, u can try sending them back via post
i did that but with much difficulty. The post man just obediently stood one side awaits my instruction lol
so i point here point there managed to send back one box of vintage toy via Ems .note there are no packing material selling in the post office.

I wish u to have a fruitful trip there! So much wanted to go there again but no kakis sad.gif
