Sony ready to spend big on PS3 technology
SCE readies "cell" chip plants, says it will begin production earlier than previously stated.

TOKYO--Sony announced today that it will be investing 120 billion yen ($1.14 billion) towards prepping production facilities to mass produce its next-generation microprocessor. This will be their second capital investment allocated toward these facilities, following a substantial investment made last year.

Almost half of the investment will be spent on Sony Computer Entertainment's production line in Nagasaki, Japan. The factory is dedicated to creating chips such as the "cell" chip, which adopt a 65-nanometer processing technology on 300-millimeter silicon wafers. About $340 million will be invested in IBM's factory located in New York. That factory will be dedicated to the same microprocessor production as SCE's line in Japan. Known to be the microprocessor chip that Sony intends to use in the next PlayStation iteration, the "cell" chip and attendant technology has been under development by Sony, IBM, and Toshiba since the spring of 2001.

The remaining $290 million will be spent on building a new plant in Oita, Japan. Unlike the other two plants that are mainly focused in creating the "cell" chip, this plant, adjacent to an existing Toshiba operation, will be dedicated towards creating 65-nanometer system chips with embedded DRAM that Toshiba and Sony developed in 2002 to delivers high-performance in broadband data processing.

The three manufacturing plants are scheduled to have a total production capacity of 15,000 chips per month. While the companies originally announced that production would begin in late 2005, the schedule has been pushed forward to early 2005.

It may go higher, if Sony adopts the PSX strategy where they focus it as more of a all-in-one entertainment system...

But I'm not sure what strategy is the Big S heading to, the purely console (PS2 type) or the all-in-one (PSX type)... wink.gif

calm yourself lah. Basically one game console can last for 5 to 8 years.

Just look at PS1 come out in year 1992. wheni buy it is 1995 and play until 1997 then i sold it away as i need $$ to study and no time to play. till 1999 the game still coming out. So it show that one game console life span is aveage 5 yrs.

I do not buy it so fast as most game are not that fantastic. after a period, the console will mature and more game will be coming out that will take 1-2 years. after the 3rd year, the price will be stablise and much affortable. Not to mention mod more stable.

In case like PS2 came out in 1999 to now 2004 and will be still going until 2007 or 2008. while i think xbox lifespan maybe shorter like till 2002 only affordable recently at 2003 and the game is not fantastic too!

No point of going for hype, nice graphic but no playablilty game also suckz and worest cost S$60 -$90!!! wat the point.

I only select my console by the games that can be entertaining like RPG for me. so far gamecube seems interesting. Then again have to see the game developers of various console to produce quality games.

I think microsoft will be done for. Why? becos they make their game console just to fight to win over sony. while sony is just doing games that is entertaining with latest technology.

That should be the purpose. To have a Play Station to play game! that why sony got so much better playable entertaining game. but the original gameprice is a bit high for most of us.

Amazon lists PlayStation 3

Retailer's Japanese arm posts product page for Sony's hotly anticipated game console.

While game console makers are still jockeying to beat each other to market with next-generation models, Sony achieved a dubious distinction recently by grabbing the first major retail notice for its upcoming machine.

The Japanese unit of online retail giant Amazon has posted a product page for the PlayStation 3, more than a year ahead of the console's expected debut.

The page has no photos or links for placing advance orders and appears to offer no significant new details on the console, which is expected to go on sale in late 2005 at the earliest. But that didn't stop several visitors from posting five-star reviews of the gadget.

Sony has slowly let details trickle out about the PlayStation 3 over the past year, confirming that the console will use the high-powered "Cell" processor--jointly developed by Sony, Toshiba, and IBM--and Sony's next-generation Blu-ray DVD technology.

Sony executives have also set broad target dates for the console, saying they'll have more details at a Japanese trade event in March and demonstration units at the E3 trade show in May. The company has yet to set a release date or price, and there are still no confirmed details, such as expected multimedia capabilities.

Rival console makers Microsoft and Nintendo are also working on next-generation consoles and hope to beat Sony to market. Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer recently told CNET News.com that the company is hard at work on the next version of the Xbox, which he said he expects will outsell the PlayStation 3. Nintendo executives have made similar promises for its next console, code-named "Revolution."

Retailers have long tapped into the exuberance of hardcore gamers by taking orders for new hardware and games well in advance of their release. The Amazon PS3 page may set a record, however, for anticipatory retail zeal, rivaled only by an eBay auction offering supposedly exclusive details on how to get a prerelease version of the PS3.

Sony reconfirms that the next-gen PlayStation will use Blu-ray
SCE confirms that its next-generation game console will use the high-capacity optical disc format and aim for backward compatibility.

TOKYO--During the same press conference in which it unveiled the new, slimmed-down PlayStation 2, Sony also revealed plans about that console's successor, commonly referred to as the PlayStation 3. Company officials confirmed that "it [has] begun preparations to adopt the Blu-ray Disc ROM (BD-ROM) format as a medium for the next-generation PlayStation."

Thought it was Sony's first official Blu-ray announcement, it has been long known that the PS3 would use the technology. For one, Sony has been investing heavily in Blu-ray research for years. Secondly, representatives for the company also told an August meeting of the Blu-ray Disc Founders (BDF), an organization committed to developing and standardizing the format, that the PS3 would use the format. Today's announcement officially sealed the deal.

For those unfamiliar with Blu-ray, it is high-density optical disc format with a memory capacity six times greater than a dual-layer DVD-ROM, able to store up to 54GB on a single disc. The format is specially designed for high-definition video and "next-generation entertainment," according to Sony. There are currently no plans to make the PS3 able to record on Blu-ray discs.

While the Blu-ray disc is being rivaled in the next-generation media war by the High-Density DVD format, SCE president Ken Kutaragi commented that the Blu-ray is simply better than HD-DVD format since it holds an incomparably larger amount of data, something Sony sees as essential for video games in the future. Using the Gran Turismo series as an example, Kutaragi explained that the first Gran Turismo used only one CD-ROM, while GT2 required 2 CD-ROMs, GT3 shifted to DVD, and the upcoming GT4 will be using a dual-layered DVDs.

Of greater import was Sony's announcement that it is working on "a single optical pick-up that can read data from all three formats of CD, DVD, and BD" for inclusion in the PS3. SCE is also hoping to make the next-generation game console backward compatible for PlayStation and PlayStation 2 games as long as it is possible. "Backward compatibility has been one of the beauties of the PlayStation," Kutaragi said. "It's an important factor since the library of games [from our past systems are] a substantial asset. It will be a challenge for us since it's technically very difficult to make the machine backward compatible."

The first details on the PS3 are expected to be released in Japan before the end of March 2005. The machine is scheduled to debut at E3 in the spring, with a playable exhibit expected at the Tokyo Game Show next fall.

PS3 chip to be unveiled in February
Sony, Toshiba, and IBM will reveal technical details on the Cell microprocessor that will be at the core of the next-gen console.

TOKYO--For the past three years, Sony, Toshiba, and IBM have been codeveloping the "Cell" chip, an advanced microprocessor that will be used for the PlayStation 3. However, the corporate triumvirate have strongly guarded the technical details on the microprocessor.

That will soon end. The three companies released a joint statement today, announcing that they will unveil the next-generation chip at the International Solid State Circuits Conference (ISSCC), which runs from February 6 to 10, 2005, in San Francisco. Details on the Cell will be disclosed in four technical papers scheduled for presentation at the Conference.

So far, what the three companies have revealed about the Cell is that it is a multicore chip featuring a 64-bit power processor core with multiple synergistic processor cores capable of massive floating point processing. The chip is optimized for intensive applications and also excels in broadband-rich media applications, including games and other forms of digital content, such as movies.

Cell processors will also have the ability to operate together as a cluster and act as one huge parallel-processing unit to handle massive data required for complex calculations. The cluster can be divided into smaller groups, each carrying out different tasks.

The Cell has a number of other features and capabilities as well, including:

- Simultaneous support of multiple operating systems
- Real-time resource-management system for real-time applications
- Multithread, multicore architecture
- On-chip hardware in support of security system for intellectual property protection
- Flexible on-chip I/O (input/output) interface
- Custom circuit design to increase overall performance
- Precise processor clock control to enable power savings
- Substantial bus bandwidth to/from main memory, as well as companion chips
- Implemented in 90-nanometer (nm) silicon-on-insulator (SOI) technology

Sony, Toshiba, and IBM also announced today that they have successfully created the first Cell processor-based workstation prototype, which they originally announced at E3. In the future, the companies expect that a one-rack Cell-based workstation will reach a performance of 16 teraflops of floating point calculations per second.

"We have a supercomputer on a chip," IBM designer Jim Kahle told the San Jose Mercury News. "This will be significantly faster than previous types of game systems and should provide new effects." Sony Computer Entertainment CTO Masayuki Chatani, was less modest, saying, "The Cell processor-based workstation will totally change the digital content creation environment."

Coincidentally, the three companies will be unveiling details on the Cell chip one month before Sony is expected to unveil the PlayStation 3 in Japan. Americans will get their first look at the still officially unnamed console at E3 2005 in Los Angeles.

PlayStation 3 to be unveiled before E3
American Sony reps confirm that there will be an event to premiere its next-generation system before the May game-industry convention.

Last year, Sony announced it would debut its next-generation console--most commonly called the PlayStation 3--at the 2005 E3 games expo. The event will take place May 18 to 20 at the Los Angeles Convention Center, and will also be where the world will get the first glimpse of Nintendo's next-generation console, code-named "Revolution."

With it now looking unlikely that Microsoft will unveil the Xbox's successor at next month's Game Developers' Conference in San Francisco, industry-watchers had been betting it will also first see the light of day at E3.

However, now it appears those bets may not be such a sure thing. Sony Computer Entertainment America representatives have confirmed to GameSpot that the US subsidiary of the Japanese electronics giant "will have an event to premier [its] next-generation system" before E3.

SCEA reps would reveal little else about the PlayStation 3 unveiling other than saying it would not be at GDC. "The premiere event has nothing to do with GDC," said one. "The event will be before E3, but the date is still not announced."

Sony's disclosure about the PlayStation 3 premiere came just hours after it officially took the wraps off the Cell processor, which the PS3 will use, at the International Solid-State Circuits Conference in San Francisco. For a full run-down on the Cell processor's capabilities, check out GameSpot Hardware's feature on the chip.

PlayStation 3 to be easy on developers, Sony vows

Company promises the PlayStation 3's processor will use new tools that should allow game designers to work smarter, not harder.

SAN FRANCISCO--It's big, complicated and shares a fair amount of DNA with IBM servers, but there's no reason to be afraid of the Cell processor, Sony technicians told game developers on Wednesday.

That's because Cell, the chip that will power the next version of Sony's PlayStation video game console, will use programming tools that developers should already be familiar with and new tools that should allow them to work smarter, two researchers from Sony Computer Entertainment America said during a panel discussion at the Game Developers Conference here.

"The Cell is a complicated piece of machinery," said Mark DeLoura, manager of developer relations for SCEA. "What we can to do to make it easy for you, we'll do...We don't want to make you learn a new API (application programming interface) every time we come out with a new chip."

Sony has been working on the Cell, in partnership with IBM and Toshiba, for four years. Engineers revealed architectural details of the chip last month, explaining that it will be a multicore processor based on IBM's Power architecture.

Sony shared some of the first programming details on the chip on Wednesday, promising that Cell would adapt many existing development tools rather than force developers to learn whole new languages.

For starters, said DeLoura, Cell graphics will rely on a variation of the standard OpenGL library already widely used for PC games. Sony and software consortium the Khronos Group are developing Open GL/ES, a dialect of OpenGL optimized for interactive content, DeLoura said.

"OpenGL is huge--it has a lot of we just don't need for games," he said. "We've developed something for games, not running CAD (computer-assisted drafting)."

Cell will also use Cg, a language developed by graphics chip leader Nvidia for creating high-level graphics effects. And programmers will be able to control the eight "synergistic processing elements" that account for the bulk of Cell's horsepower using standard C or C++ tools, instead of the exacting assembly-level programming required with the current PlayStation 2.

New tools include Collada, a dialect of XML (extensible markup language) being created by Sony and creators of leading development tools to serve as a standard format for describing game assets. The goal is to save developers the hassle of recreating the same visual elements in different games. Make a great looking pine tree, for example, and you'll have a uniform way to describe the tree to other development tools and game systems.

"The tool vendors are working with us to create the importers and exporters for you," DeLoura said. "It's their job to make sure your stuff arrives intact."

Such reassurances were especially welcome after Dominic Mallinson, research director for SCEA, explained likely programming models for getting the most out of Cell's nine processing units, a task he likened to creating music for a large orchestra. System-level work will be handled by the operating system, but it'll be up to developers to figure out how to slice and dice their computing tasks.

"You, the developers, are the composers," Mallinson said. "It's up to you to assign tasks to get the best possible performance."

RUMOR #1: An image of the PlayStation 3 (pictured) has been accidentally made public.

Source: GameSpot's own Community Forums.

The official story: " We have not released any info regarding our next generation system, so any content or images floating around the web is surely speculation and unfounded."--Sony Computer Entertainment America spokesperson.

What we heard: By far, the biggest stir this week was caused by a (uses fingers) "leaked" mockup of the Playstation 3, which surfaced on GameSpot's own forums. While next-gen mockups are nothing new, this latest one's detail earned it more attention that previous would-be PS3s. Reportedly taken from an E3 pamphlet, the black matte and chrome console looked very slick indeed, sharing a similar design to the PSP. However, the product page sported a few features that had RC's spider sense tingling. Most damning was its mention of having "PS3 / PSP UMD MediaMove" functionality, meaning the device would have a built-in UMD burner. Besides adding to the hardware cost of the unit, a built-in UMD burner would go against Sony's push to make consumers use the Memory Stick Duo for writeable media. Also suspicious is its lack of wireless-controller-activity indicators and the fact the console looks a lot like a Photoshopped version of the video projector pictured directly underneath it. And won't Sony have some kind of snazzy new logo for the device?

Bogus or not bogus?: Bogus.

Sony moves up E3 PS3 unveiling

Japanese game giant's expo press conference will now be held before Microsoft's and Nintendo's.

Yesterday, Microsoft sent out invitations to its E3 press conference, at which the company confirmed it will show off its next-generation console. As has been the case for the past several years, the event will occur on the evening of the Monday before E3 officially begins on Wednesday.

This year, the Microsoft conference will happen at 6:45pm PDT on Monday, May 16. Nintendo's press conference, which will feature its next-gen "Revolution" console, is slated for 9am PDT on Tuesday, May 17, in keeping with tradition. Customarily, Sony would then get the last word in on Tuesday afternoon at its own event, at which it has said it will unveil the next PlayStation.

As it turns out, this year things are going to be a little different. Shortly after many members of the games press received their invites from Microsoft, Sony sent invitations to its conference--on Monday afternoon. The new time means Sony will now have the distinction of showing its console to the public before its two rivals.

However, it remains to be seen whether Sony's E3 event will mark the first exhibition of a next-generation console. Sony had planned to show off the next PlayStation at an event in Japan in March, an event that failed to materialize. Also, a Web site currently offering glimpses of what appears to be the next-gen Xbox is also displaying a countdown clock that ends on Thursday, May 12, causing some speculation that Microsoft will unveil its machine then.
