New Transformers Title Takes After Gears of War
This sounds like the game fans have been waiting 25 years for.
by Jim Reilly

LATEST VIDEO

December 11, 2009 - Finally, fans yearning for a good Transformers videogame may be in luck. The newest issue of GameInformer magazine reveals a new title based off the hit '80s franchise is coming next year, and it's going to be awesome.

This new entry, Transformers: War for Cybertron, looks to erase all those years of mediocre titles. Developer High Moon Studios (Dark Watch, The Bourne Conspiracy) isn't messing around, either. They're taking cues from Epic Games' highly acclaimed Gears of War franchise to build its gameplay foundation, which the developer is focusing on first and foremost, they say.

The Gears' comparisons don't just end there, though, Transformers: War for Cybertron is also a third-person, over-the-shoulder shooter that utilizes the Unreal engine. The screenshots released certainly don't have the pop Epic can do, but these early shots look admirable. Cover is less of a focus, however, as players will be able to transform at any time causing battles to be more about speed and agility.

The character designs, unfortunately, are not exact copies of the classic '80s designs, but rather a cross between the original and Michael Bay's movie monstrosities. Thankfully, however, the designs lean heavily toward the original, so characters like Megatron, Optimus Prime, and even Soundwave all have their iconic colors and shapes.

The story isn't part of any previous movie or comic series. It's brand new, and takes place before the Transformers leave Cybertron and head to Earth. Hasbro is even adopting this story as canon for the franchise.

Transformers: War for Cybertron contains two separate single-player campaigns, one for Decepticon and Autobots each, which are interlinked throughout the main storyline. The game promises online co-op and other modes, too, but details are still under wraps for now.

So far, it seems like it has potential to be the best Transformers title to date. Transformers: War for Cybertron is scheduled for release on Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, and PC next year. Check out the new GameInformer for the full details.

Graphics look like Unreal 3 engine.
super_convoy
Confirmed Unreal Engine 3. Hopefully we'll get a good shooter out of this. Three-player co-op sounds a bit awkward though. I mean, it's odd.

shinG
It already sounds a bit funny...
"Gameplay similar to Gears of War but less emphasis on the cover mechanic"
But wasn't GoW focused around its cover-system...?

We will have to see if the developers can make transforming good enough to replace the cover mechanic. dodging bullets in vehicle mode sounds nice on paper.

W00t the multiplayer demo is out on the XBox 360 today.

Not sure for PS3 yet.

Just played the demo for the 360.. pretty addictive and fun so far.. graphics so so and controls need time to get used to it.. but overall action is fast and intense.. I would say its a cross between unreal tourney and gears of war..

hoping the single player is mode is great as well.. but my current view is that its worth getting if you are a causal gamer but a must get for TF fans.. smile.gif

about a week more to go b4 official release.. clap.gif
JAZZ
Starscream really look like a fusion of Hot Rod & Starscream. Don't really fancy OP but almost all the Decepticons character looks better than the Autobots in this War for Cybertron.

Closing Comments
High Moon has been very good at saying all the right things with War for Cybertron leading up to its arrival in stores, but many licensed titles have talked a great game before falling apart when all was said and done. Thankfully, War for Cybertron impresses with an excellent single-player campaign with full co-op support, the included Horde-alike Escalation mode, and surprisingly deep and inventive online multiplayer component. Transformers: War for Cybertron has taken the magic of playing with plastic and metal toys that turn into cool s**t both alone and with friends and have distilled that into something pretty special. This is a surprise, dark horse contender for best way to spend your time online this summer.

9.0 Presentation
The interface and presentation of War for Cybertron is a constantly shifting, transforming menagerie of Cybertronian cool.

8.5 Graphics
The redesigns and little graphical touches in WFC - like the way Transformers intersect with switches and turrets - are fantastic, but the frame-rate sometimes suffers, and more variety would be nice.

8.0 Sound
WFC's music is passable, but occasionally stumbles into shooter cliches. The sound effects are great though, particular the angry screams of a Soldier right before they're smashed to pieces.

9.0 Gameplay
WFC is super responsive and adds an entire mechanic to well executed third person shooting to create something pretty memorable, with a unique identity.

9.0 Lasting Appeal
Between a 12 hour singleplayer campaign with full 3 player co-op, Escalation, and a swath of awesome multiplayer modes, WFC could last you well into this Summer.

OVERALL Outstanding

12hr single play only, well kinda short leh, but most probably will still look for one when it comes. Finally a decent TF game, not like the 2 previous movies junks.
super_convoy
The game time will be prolonged if you do the levelling up thing. Hope it can be done in Escalation Mode. I don't like to play against other players (especially overseas) due to lag. Playing with friends fighting against A.I. on the other hand can be pretty fun even if it's all about grinding. For one, we can b***h about it.

PS3 version.. Some shops give u the shockwave code
shinG
Just started playing this on PC.

I really like how they made G1 versions of movie characters like Brawl, Barricade and ROTF brakedown(yes, the scout class toy)
super_convoy
The metal scrapping gives me a headache, but this is a great shooter nonetheless. Started the Decepticon campaign a few hours ago, and completed it at 7pm (on online co-op with my buddy). The boss fight that (sort of) spanned across two chapters is pretty epic. Love the humourous banter among the 'cons.

super_convoy
Completed both the campaigns. Here are some opinions.

Likes:
- shooting frenzy with Transformers
- seamless transformation (just for shiok)
- flying sequences that doesn't give me motion sickness
- lots of easter eggs
- boss fights vs Omega Supreme and Trypticon!
- funny dialogues
- the story mode doesn't happen concurrently - the Decepticons story happens first (Chapters 1-5), followed by the Autobots response (Chapters 6-10)
- towards the end, you get to see The Ark
- and, surprisingly, the online multiplayer (even though it's a grind), mainly because there's no lag if you search "regional", and I can finally get some kills biggrin.gif

Dislikes:
- no cover system
- stupid A.I., especially your allies, who contributes nothing at all when you solo the game
- cheap bosses (especially on hard mode, they blow)
- "low ammo/ out of ammo" - damn, you're forever out of ammo in this game

General Grievous
Completed the Decepticon Campaign last night. The game is really awesomely epic so far.
Game of The Year for me!! clap.gif
super_convoy
I prefer the Decepticons campaign over the Autobots one. In the Autobots one, Optimus is too preachy. Megatron's sarcastic ruthlessness makes me laugh a lot more.

I'm now playing the online multiplayer, levelling up my Scout and Soldier classes mainly in Conquest mode. Level 10 Scout (the Autobot scout in female form looks like Arcee) and Level 5 Soldier. Don't know when I can ever unlock Prime Mode, which I think requires you to level all four classes to 25.

This weekend is double XP weekend for this game's online multiplayer. I think I'll camp out in Conquest for the additional XP.

General Grievous
Completed the Autobot campaign today!!
Wish I could play online but I can't lol.
Anyway I just got Cybertron Adventures for the Wii. Gonna test it out real soon. I hope it's a good rail shooter. smile.gif
shinG
Completed the campaign, some thoughts

-Im a transformers fan so... its Game of the year for me
-Decepticon Bombers = Skyquake??
-This game has very memorable scenes from start to finish.
-I love how they mix elements from all over the franchise, from G1 to animated to LiveActionMovie
-This feels like the 1st time i've heard Peter Cullen as Optimus Prime in a strong leadership position. I've always felt prime didn't get the opportunity to show his leadership in the G1 cartoon series.
-Transformation is smooth and actually useful in combat.
-This Megatron end up sounding like Arnold Scwharzenegger in quite a few scenes.

And some complaints. Mostly for the PC port and multi-player.

-No text chat or even voice chat for multiplayer. For real? this age and day?
-PC ver does not have remappable key bindings. The default keybindings aren't the best. (ie. G is not a good button for grenades. easily accessible buttons like '1','2','3' aren't utilised)
-PC ver's default mouse sensitivity is quite off. Your jet is often wiggling when boost is on.
-No LAN option and no split screen option... can't play with people right beside you.
-No indication of other player's Ping/Latency. Can't avoid meeting laggy players in Public games.
-A mini-map would really help in multi-player.
-Apparently the shop-exclusive characters do not extend to PC (Shockwave/Demolisher/Jazz)
-Your AI helpers are quite useless, its almost as if they are non-existent.

^^That said. If you were choosing between PC or console version, I would recommend getting the console versions. At least until High Moon Studios releases a patch to provide some much needed features. The game is still loads of fun, but this PC port wasn't so well done. PC users like me have to suck thumb.
super_convoy
Finally levelled up my Scout to Level 25 over the double XP weekend. The last few levels were a pain to do even when playing on Conquest, with the large amount of XP required and people who were hell bent on killing anything that moves instead of capturing conquest points.

Still a long way to go for unlocking Prime Mode though. Soldier Level 12, Leader Level 10, Scientist level 13. And there's no more double XP from 9am today, damn.

Transformers: War for Cybertron DLC Made Official
Get your hands on five more characters and 4 new maps next week.

http://ps3.ign.com/articles/110/1107516p1.html

Here's hoping that you didn't trek over to eBay to fork over hundreds of dollars for Transformers: War for Cybertron's previously retailer exclusive characters, as Activision and High Moon have officially announced the New Map and Character pack, set for release July 27th for PSN and Xbox Live for $10.00 and 800 MS Points respectively.

As detailed in the original leak of the DLC release here, the New Map and Character Pack DLC includes new characters Scattershot and Onslaught, as well as Shockwave, Jazz, and Demolishor, who were originally exclusive to pre-order customers at particular retail locations. The DLC also contains two new multiplayer maps, and also doubles the number of maps for the Horde-like Escalation mode to four.

It's a bit late actually. I'm two more levels to completing combined 100 levels in multiplayer. My levels are Scout 25, Scientist 25, Leader 25 and Soldier 23 (close to 24 too actually, very close, just a match or two more). I've smashed escalation past the 20th wave several times on the two maps. Without any new achievements/ trophies to boot, seriously would anyone who's not a Transformers fan pay 800MS for some skins and maps? I know I'll buy the DLC regardless of whether I'm done with the game, but others who have already completed everything?

Some of the chassis and class of these characters are pretty weird too. I know Shockwave is a "scientist", but one of the perks of the Scientist class is disguise. Seriously, would anyone fall for a red color Shockwave when he uses this perk in an online multiplayer scenario? His disguise will be blown every single time! Anyone who seriously wants to play this game properly wouldn't use him at all, making his chassis primarily redundant. If I'm the developer, I'll make Shockwave a Leader class character to save him the embarassment.
