The team that brought you the dud
天下無敵小劍仙 has announced a new book, and it's none other than the nth rendition of Romance of the Three Kingdoms.
Titled "三国神兵", this book looks like it's riding on the 火鳳燎原 wave of being liberal with historical characters. Even the character designs look suspiciously familiar...

I'm pretty sure this is a shrewd move by 崎駿. Surely, the opportunity to release the whole lot of weapons as merchandize is there.
You can check their website for updates. It's a bit messy, but that young girl who hosts the 天下無敵小劍仙 column is there too.
http://uma-press.com/node/82You can find the weapons scan there. They look really like Dynasty Warriors weapons to me.

But been "cheated" many times by HK comics from their always cool design, but poor story and presentation.

I dun really have much hope in this, afterall they are doing a San Guo comics and it can not run away from the history (just like Tian Zi series), so Liu Bei or Cao Cao will never unify China, Guan Yu and Zhang Fei will have to be killed in the story and Lu Bu (even with his mighty skills) will die even before Zhuge Liang appears (if they ever draw until then).
Unless they want to totally disregard the history facts and novel's plots. But without those as a basis, will San Guo Sheng Bing still consider a San Guo comics

well they couldn't do any worse then to take a leaf out of the Japanese manga adaptation .. whereby Zhao Yun was a girl n if I recall .. Liu Bei was a Japanese ..talk bout ground breaking n earth shattering story lines

.. that really was bold ....

If the story can he half as good as 火鳳燎原, I'm fine. Even if the outcome of events may follow history (but what's real, what's not?), the processes leading to them can be altered to show different motives (which 火鳳 is very good at doing).
But yes, I've no major hopes on HK comics nowadays.

Judging by 葉明發's usual standards, I'd be happy if he goes beyond 20 issues! He's very inconsistent.
Heard that this book will have a video gaming influence/ approach. More like they want to draw a Monster Hunter comic, but is afraid that there's no market for it. Thus, they use Three Kingdoms as a basis to draw the Monster Hunter-style comic, which explains the weapons and monsters you see in the ads.

20 issues?! So short???
I will be kind to say 100 if someone want to do a proper comic for ROTK...
Just the meeting of Liu Bei, Guan Yu and Zhang Fei can stuck for a few while. Not forgetting the Yellow Turban troops before that.
Then
Dong Zhuo ruling.
Guan Du Battle
Cao Cao expansion downwards
Sun Jian and Sun Ce growth
cmi Liu Bei fleeing ard to seek refuge
Battle of Chi Bi
Forming of 3 Kingdoms
Downfall of Shu and then Wu
Collapse of Wei
And thats not considering all the in depth mythical stories to each character...

To HK comics, as long as it doesn't sell, they'll cut the book by ending it abruptly. 葉明發 already has 3-4 titles that were ended this way, so I really won't be surprised if the book ends quickly. They may even tell you, oh, "Part 1" ends, stay tune for "Part 2", which will never be released.
I'm just hoping that:
1. Story will be good, less buggy, and they plan ahead for the story;
2. Art is consistent;
3. And if the above two are present, that someone actually buys it.

I've been reading HK comics for years (almost three decades!) and the recent trend is always similar. The reason why 天下無敵小劍仙 can go beyond 20 issues is because the book, regardless of how crap it is, actually sells. They even increased print because it's very popular among the HK fans, what with 小劍仙 being involved and all. I believe they sell 90% of the book they printed (they mentioned in one issue), and 90% is a very high number nowadays. Many HK comics can have up to 80% returns, which is why a new kind of business has surfaced, that of "back copies" service. Where do all these back copies come from? It's from unsold printed copies!
It's amazing how a fantastic book like 中华英雄 数码复刻版 (it's reissued by 崎駿, the same company releasing this book) only prints 10,000 copies, and 天下無敵小劍仙 goes close to 30,000. But that's how it goes. The book sells, and they continue to release it. 天下無敵小劍仙 is supposed to be a 16-20 issues thing, and it's now beyond 20, filling in for time (and of course, revenue) until 三国神兵 is released. The success of 天下無敵小劍仙 (in terms of sales - I still regard this book as an utter failure in terms of story, art, nostalgia, everything) is also why Tony Wong is buying the copyright for 醉拳 to release their crappily named 黄玉郎醉拳. It's for the same reason that 神掌龍劍飛, originally planned as an 18-issue title, has now became an indefinite title. Apparently it sells enough copies to warrant an extension.
The three points I mentioned earlier about story, art and sales volume is more or less my hope for this book. As a reader, obviously I'd hope for good story and art. If good story and art are present, obviously I'd hope that the book continues, and the only thing that keeps it going is sales. 神兵4, which started really well, suffered because not enough people buys it. The quality has decreased quite badly. Art is still ok for some parts, but story is totally haywire. It's now used as a filler for revenue until 黄玉郎醉拳 is released, but its quality will continue to drop as the artist is drawing 黄玉郎醉拳.

The latest issue of 王風雷傳 is released on 20th as well, a day earlier than its usual Friday (that's our Saturday, due to shipping) release in HK.
Rumors are that JD is trying to make it difficult for 三国神兵 to survive by doing so. Imagine, 龙虎门 and 王風雷傳 (the top two selling comics in HK right now) both released on the same day, who'd buy 三国神兵?
Take it with a pinch of salt, but this HK comics industry is really like politics now.
Meanwhile, hope to pick up 三国神兵 from the shop later. Don't know whether will have.

I got it at uncle - he's at Ginza... I mean, West Coast Plaza now.
Art is decent, but story is a total zero.
The Three Kingdoms characters in this book are "chosen" to own tremendous powers, together with an accompanying weapon that has different elemental powers. Apart from that, the weapons also have accompanying mystic creatures that can be summoned. It's all very fantasy, Japanese RPG-like, and I kinda dig the concept.
But as I said, the story is a zero here. 52 pages and there's no direction at all, just fighting all the way. It's a bit sad.

Uncle moved to Blk 713 Clementi West St. 2, and stayed there for some months before moving to Blk 72+ (can't remember exact number), beside the Singapore Pools shop. He has since returned to Ginza, now renamed West Coast Plaza. If you cross that infamous overhead bridge leading to Ginza/ West Coast Plaza, you should find his shop conveniently tucked near the entrance near the bridge, beside the newly opened BBQ Chicken Restaurant.

No, just the end of the Yellow Turbans story.
I'm quite disappointed that this book is becoming "Monster Hunter - Three Kingdoms version". Too many monsters-slaying scenes, which resulted in very slow pace. 16 issues to do Yellow Turbans is ridiculous.
Apparently they've received the same feedback from readers, and will switch the format to a short-story format. I'll see how it goes from here before deciding whether to continue buying.

Not getting. Decided to stop buying after reading #16.
Special edition usually goes for HK$28, so it's double the price. But it really depends on how much the publisher charges. For a gauge HK$14 (normal weekly issue) is about S$4+ in terms of comic shop's exchange rate (factor in shipping and profit).

Turned out I continued buying after deciding to stop some weeks ago. The new story is quite disappointing. A lot of big pictures per page and not much pace in terms of story as usual. Over at the HK forums, there's a hoo-hah about this book copying concepts from mangas:

Obviously, readers complained. But guess the response from the publishers:
(this is from latest issue, you'll get it tomorrow in Singapore)
He's accusing that people who complained are those who downloaded the comic, and labelled them as "turtles".
This is worse than ridiculous, and I immediately called comic shop to cancel my order.
I feel sorry for the girl who has been trying very hard to promote the book and respond to feedback on their official website. It's very rare to have a comic publisher doing this sort of thing, opening its website to allow people to post their views. Too bad her boss is a nutcase.
