Another reason why Blizzard's Warcraft is still the best. drool.gif

Though massively multiplayer online role-playing games have been around for years, it has taken this long for the genre's breakthrough hit to finally emerge. Here is the online role-playing game you should play, no matter who you are. This is because World of Warcraft brings out all the best aspects of this style of gaming, if not many of the best aspects of gaming in general. It also features many of the specific characteristics that have made Blizzard Entertainment's previous games so entertaining, memorable, long-lasting, and successful. Of course, the company's past track record did not guarantee that World of Warcraft could have turned out this well. Such high quality simply cannot be expected, nor should it be missed.

Except for online payment and local servers is a big problem here. wallbash.gif

Couple's online gaming causes infant's death

Korean press picks up tale of tragedy when couple plays World of Warcraft to excess, infant perishes from neglect.

In a story out of Korea which is just now surfacing in the Western press, a couple in Incheon, South Korea, were arrested last week when their four-month-old daughter died after being left alone by the couple for hours. The mother and father reportedly had gone to a nearby Internet cafe, lost themselves in playing Blizzard's massively multiplayer online PC game World of Warcraft, and returned to their home only to find the infant dead from suffocation. "We booked the pair on criminal charges, judging that when you consider the situation, they were responsible for their daughter's death," a policeman told the Chosun Ilbo newspaper. The couple reportedly told police, "We were thinking of playing for just an hour or two and returning home like usual, but the game took longer that day." The infant was the couple's only child.

The cost is rather prohibitive.

First you have to buy the game then the cards and so on.

MMORPGS can bleed you dry if you're not careful. They're fun but still deadly to a bank account.

hmmm, i still think its quite cost effective for me,....
it stopped me from going out,.. therefore, the US$15 per month is justified laugh.gif

World of Warcraft expansion reveal, aka "The Burning Crusade". rock.gif

Press release

ANAHEIM, Calif. – October 28, 2005 – Blizzard Entertainment, Inc. today announced plans for the upcoming expansion set to World of Warcraft®, its award-winning subscription-based massively multiplayer online role-playing game. World of Warcraft: The Burning Crusade™ will take players to a new realm of adventure and intrigue as they continue to explore Azeroth and the regions beyond. New races to play, new lands to explore, and new levels of power for existing World of Warcraft characters all await players in The Burning Crusade.

"We're extremely proud of what we created with World of Warcraft, and we look forward to expanding the boundaries of the game with The Burning Crusade,” said Mike Morhaime, president and cofounder of Blizzard Entertainment®. "With all of the new content we have planned, the expansion set will offer something for every World of Warcraft player to explore and enjoy."

World of Warcraft: The Burning Crusade takes up where World of Warcraft left off, with the races of the Horde and the Alliance continuing to rebuild their lives among the shattered lands of Azeroth. Amid the fragile peace that exists between the factions come rumors that the Burning Legion’s age-old war against Azeroth – the so-called Burning Crusade – has been rekindled and threatens to consume the world in another firestorm of war and strife. Old allegiances fall and new ones rise as both the Horde and Alliance look to new friends in this time of need.

Building on the award-winning formula set forth in World of Warcraft, the expansion set adds even more rich content to an already massive game. Players can look forward to:

New Player Races: New allies will join the game, expanding the story line and allowing players to develop powerful new characters within the world.
Higher Level Limit: The game’s level cap is being raised to 70, and every new level will offer meaningful spell, ability, and talent upgrades for each character class.
New Lands and Battlegrounds: Explore the magical realms of the Blood Elves, journey through the Dark Portal into untamed Outland, and visit dungeons and battlefields previously inaccessible to players.
Flying Mounts: In Outland, players will gain access to unique airborne mounts that will allow for smoother travel over some of that region’s more hazardous terrain.
Jewelcrafting, Socketable Items, and More: Crafters will be pleased to know that the expansion adds an all-new profession to the game: Jewelcrafting. With Jewelcrafting comes the advent of socketable items in World of Warcraft, which will give players additional variety in how they can customize their gear. In addition, existing professions will be enhanced to take advantage of the increased character-level limit.
New Quests, New Monsters, and New Challenges: As the boundaries of World of Warcraft are stretched farther than ever before, there will be exciting new quests for players to undertake and new monsters to confront. And with greater challenges come greater rewards….

Since launching in November 2004 in North America, Australia, and New Zealand, World of Warcraft has quickly grown to become the world’s most popular MMORPG, with a worldwide subscriber base of over 4.5 million players. For more information on World of Warcraft: The Burning Crusade, visit the official World of Warcraft website at www.worldofwarcraft.com. Additional news, including new features and release dates, will be announced there in the coming months.
World of Warcraft’s Paying Customer Definition
World of Warcraft customers include individuals who have paid a subscription fee or purchased a prepaid card to play World of Warcraft, as well as those who have purchased the installation box bundled with one free month access. Internet Game Room players that have accessed the game over the last seven days are also counted as customers. The above definition excludes all players under free promotional subscriptions, expired or cancelled subscriptions, and expired pre-paid cards. Customers in licensees’ territories are defined along the same rules.

Blood Elf Paladins and Draenei Shaman

http://www.worldofwarcraft.com/burningcrus...classcombo.html

As we draw closer to the release of World of Warcraft: The Burning Crusade, more of the secrets shrouding the draenei and blood elves are being revealed. In the upcoming expansion, you will finally be able to play classes that were previously unavailable to your faction. The blood elves have harnessed the power of the Light for their own needs, and the Horde recognizes the value of these renegade blood elf paladins. Meanwhile, the draenei have been granted the wisdom and strength of the elements, and a number of draenei now follow the path of the shaman.

Flying Mounts Preview

One of the most exciting new features of World of Warcraft: The Burning Crusade will be the introduction of a new kind of mount that will provide players with unprecedented freedom to explore the world of Outland from an entirely new perspective. After reaching level 70, players will eventually be able to obtain flying mounts for their characters. The nether drake is one of these.

Burning Crusade sparks Collector's Edition
Blizzard outlines deluxe version of World of Warcraft expansion, which will include trading cards, soundtrack, art book, and more; price still unknown.

If you're one of the 7 million World of Warcraft subscribers, chances are you're probably already planning on buying the first expansion to the massively popular massively multiplayer online role-playing game. Featuring two new playable races and a new continent, World of Warcraft: The Burning Crusade goes on sale in the US in November for $39.99, and it's rated T for Teen.

However, if you've got some extra cash to shell out, developer-publisher Blizzard Entertainment today officially confirmed rumors that The Burning Crusade would be getting the Collector's Edition treatment. Besides coming in a deluxe box (pictured), the CE will have a variety of goodies for the hardcore Azeroth denizen. It will contain both CD and DVD editions of the expansion, as well as an exclusive in-game pet called the "Netherwhelp." Also included will be a soundtrack CD and a mouse pad with a map of the expansion's new continent, Outland.

The Collector's Edition will also feature a DVD with a behind-the-scenes documentary about the making of the expansion. The disc "will offer more than two hours worth of developer interviews and commentary on all aspects of the creation of The Burning Crusade, as well as trailers and cinematics from the game, and even footage of panel discussions from BlizzCon," according to Blizzard.

Also included in the Collector's Edition is a hardcover "coffee table book" featuring "exclusive concept art" from the expansion. The tome will be packaged with two starter packs for the forthcoming, Magic: The Gathering-esque World of Warcraft Trading Card Game. Besides the cards in the two packs, the CE will contain three "exclusive tournament-legal World of Warcraft Trading Card Game cards" unavailable elsewhere.

Though it was big on listing the contents of the Collector's Edition of The Burning Crusade, Blizzard omitted one major detail--its cost. "Further details on the contents, as well as pricing and availability info, will be announced at a later date," was all the company would say on the matter. The Collector's Edition of the original WOW cost $79.99, but it was only available in very limited quantities and has been out of print for nearly two years. Sealed copies of the original WOW: CE currently command a premium on eBay, selling for as much as $300.

WORLD OF WARCRAFT®: WRATH OF THE LICH KING™ UNVEILED

Blizzard Entertainment® reveals new expansion for its popular subscription-based massively multiplayer online role-playing game at BlizzCon™ gaming festival

http://worldofwarcraft.com/wrath/index.xml

ANAHEIM, Calif. -- August 3, 2007 -- Blizzard Entertainment, Inc. today announced plans for the second expansion to World of Warcraft®, its award-winning massively multiplayer online role-playing game (MMORPG). Unveiled at the company's BlizzCon™ gaming festival before an audience of more than 8,000 gamers, World of Warcraft: Wrath of the Lich King™ will open the forbidding wasteland of Northrend to exploration by the hardiest adventurers. New levels of power, challenging new dungeons and encounters, an exciting new character profession, and the game's first hero class are just some of the new features awaiting players in Wrath of the Lich King.

"This expansion will add some of the most infamous characters and settings from the Warcraft® universe to World of Warcraft," said Mike Morhaime, president and cofounder of Blizzard Entertainment®. "In addition to new story content, Wrath of the Lich King will introduce a number of features specifically requested by players over the past couple of years. We're looking forward to sharing further details with everyone as development progresses."

Players last visited Northrend in Warcraft III: The Frozen Throne™, when Arthas Menethil fused with the spirit of Ner'zhul to become the Lich King, one of the most powerful beings in the Warcraft universe. He now broods atop the Frozen Throne deep in Icecrown Citadel, clutching the rune blade Frostmourne and marshaling the undead armies of the Scourge. In Wrath of the Lich King, the forces of the Alliance and the Horde will venture into battle against the Scourge amid Northrend's howling winds and fields of jagged ice.

Building on the foundation established in World of Warcraft and The Burning Crusade, Wrath of the Lich King will add a rich variety of content to an already massive game. New features coming with the game's second expansion include:

Death Knight Hero Class: Create a high-level Death Knight character -- the game's first hero class -- once certain challenges have been met.
Increased Level Cap: Advance to level 80 and gain potent new talents and abilities along the way.
Northrend: Explore the harsh new continent of Northrend, packed with new zones, quests, dungeons, monsters, and items -- and do battle with the undead armies of the Lich King.
"Inscription" Profession: Learn this exciting new profession and gain unique ways to permanently enhance spells and abilities in the game.
Siege Weapons and Destructible Buildings: Take the battle to another level with new player-vs.-player game mechanics and new battlefields to wage war on.
New Character Customization: Change how characters look and express themselves, with different hairstyles and dance animations.

Since launching in November 2004, World of Warcraft has become the world's most popular MMORPG, with a subscriber base of more than 9 million players. The game's first expansion, The Burning Crusade, broke PC-game sales records in North America and Europe by selling nearly 2.4 million copies in its first 24 hours of availability and approximately 3.5 million copies in its first month. World of Warcraft is available in seven different languages and, in addition to North America and Europe, is played in mainland China, Korea, Australia, New Zealand, Singapore, Thailand, Malaysia, and the regions of Taiwan, Hong Kong, and Macau.
